After the walk, we had a discussion about things we found by the walk and how we can use these technologies to change the viewpoint and relation to the city.

The Lloyd Hotel is located on the waterfront of the port of Amsterdam. It was originally built to accommodate and conduct health checks of emigrants heading to South America. After the owner of the building Royal Dutch Lloyd was bankrupted in 1935, it was used to detain prisoners from the resistance movement against Germany during the Second World War. When the war was over, it was used as a general prison, and thereafter as a juvenile prison.

It was once a closed and gloomy space, but in the 1990’s it was completely changed into an open space, as artists started to use the building for studios. Then in 2004, Ms. Oxenaar transformed it into the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy, a new type of building functioning as a hotel as well as a cultural embassy. The hotel aimed to be a promotional site for Dutch cultural value and its spirit.
Ms. Oxenaar´s most important consideration when reconstructing the building as a hotel was to untie it from its dark history. Instead of overwriting its dark past, she creatively and playfully embedded the historical context into the interior designs. An open ceiling space was constructed at the center of the building, which created an open atmosphere.

The hotel was decorated with contemporary design and art pieces, and a number of art events were organised at their spacious public space as well as in the guest rooms. Amongst the many artworks displayed in the hotel is a permanent installation by the Amsterdam based artist Atsuko Watanabe.

The hotel adopted a unique style with one to five-star guest rooms co-existing throughout the building. A long bed for eight people and a grand piano, a loft room with a bath tub and a swing hanging in the center, a room that purposely place bathroom and toilet at its center… The space is filled with wide range of design items selected with a very playful Dutch taste, art events are organised regularly. Ms. Oxenaar created a place that is more than a hotel, where one can have experiences of time and space that differ a completely from everyday life.

The participants’ response reflected their habits and preferences. “I sleep reading a book.” “I come home late at night so I sneak into the bed, to not wake up my partner.” “I leave the window open so I can enjoy having the cat coming from outside entering my duvet.”

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">On 9 November, we had a great opportunity to hear Mr. Alejandro Haiek Coll talk about his practices. His projects revitalizes local unused spaces, utilizes local skills and knowledge, with materials that are available in the area.
He aims to build a space that create relationships through his projects. Understanding the social contexts and issues in the area, he attempts to solve them together with the local community. The result has a great impact. In one case, abandoned car park was transformed into a cultural center, using local skills and available materials. Locals hang out and involve in activities such as playing basket balls and learning how to DJ. Even the waste from the project are not wasted and are recycled.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">After the lecture, we had a discussion on architectural or cultural problems of Tokyo. <span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">LECTURE
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ms.Kira introduced herself and how Amsterdam had been developed.
She studied the relationship between architecture and city under Rem Koolhaas. With globalization, everyone has the feeling to be able to go everywhere, and she does, but one of the reason why she stays long time in Amsterdam is that she can look how the architectures related to the city. It is known that Amsterdam has lots of canals and canal houses. Amsterdam is quite young city, became a capital of Netherland in 16th century. And its urban design was quite dictated. Central area began to develop in middle-age, kept developed around there in 16th and 17th century, and industrial era, and the harbor area was changed in postwar era.
City vision which an architect proposes changes with times.
He/ She also proposes not only buildings, but also trees and greens at a certain time.
So now, it registered with the world heritage, we can see streets and buildings made in different times. However, principals of the city has never been changed, these had been considered like the various layers of traffic, the public and etc. now.
One important example of urban design, it is about houses in Amsterdam. In the early 20th century, this was happened with Olympic games in Amsterdam, architects began to suppose their ideas taking dialogues with communities. In 1930s, the city expanded and was planed to develop to suburb, but wars happened. After WWⅡ, people demanded a lot of houses, this area was developed. About 20 years later, the demand for houses decreased because of change in people's carrier and the end of baby boom. This area was hollowed inside, and foreigners lived and many social problems happened.
But now, environment of this area has been changing, for example, high cost houses are built, and the progress in new way to use streets. Another action, about the re-development of water front. This area was also hollowed inside, but now has cultural facilities in the central and residential area is around there. In water front area, island to island have different strategies.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">After Lehman Shock in 2008, it has been changing that client and the city from top down style by government to bottom up style by citizens. People take initiative, build a house together. For example, in the north side of Amsterdam, artists and architects made artists' space by container and skill framework at an old shipyard. "I feel dynamism of people," Ms. Kira said.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

For sending money to their kids in their hometown, he lives with his wife, working busy in a restaurant 16 hours in a day and 7 days in a week in a floating village for workers making the city. They came here one and a half years ago, and will move to next city in the near future. The lecturer Daan said, “Urbanization moves the city and boundary of the city spreads. But people who moved cities are 2nd class citizen by city legislation. In China, 300 million people moved to cities in this 30 years. The speed of urbanization in China is as quickly as in Japan of 1960s. As the story of Mr.Deng, it’s important element that indivisual “small story” often tells “bigger story.” Read “bigger story” behind the information.”
1. You can see Chinese residential models, high-rise apartment buildings and fine meshed urban fabric in Africa. The Chinese model can fit very well in Africa for security reason. But it is divided into public or private space. Share house is popular for young people in recent Japan.
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

CITY
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">次はMELANCHOLIA(憂鬱な気分)。
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">最後にANGER(怒り)。

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">---------------------------------
<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I had a hard time to listen to the speech in English.
Some point which I was impressed is "difference" about sensitivity to the City between people in Adelaide and people in Tokyo. They connected a word "Ease" with hill, skyline, riding horse etc... These are never appeared in my mind.
So my conclusion is that "City" should be connected to sensitivity with people living there no matter how modern or convenience or beautiful.
critical studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14165222127974267589noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3186388966638584735.post-87604065317274233942013-10-04T21:59:00.002+09:002013-10-04T21:59:53.381+09:00Phase 1-1: URBAN FIELD TRIP - ALTERNATIVE MODERNISM by Julian Worrall<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">On 14 September, the moderator Julian took the participants to a field trip from Shimbashi Station to Tokyo Station.
This surveillance system was made in Tokugawa regime.
Advertising : Screens deliver the news, and billboards show commercial culture. This statue shows all come together and love each other at Shimbashi. So, 40 years ago, did nobody come together and love each other at Shimbashi ? In fact, there is a secret history on SL square. After the WWⅡ, the black market opened and had maintained. But in 1964, when Tokyo Olympic was hold, a clean image of the city became important and the black market disappeared. But the rest of this is in New Shimbashi Building, particularly in the underground shopping center.
Like this, many things made in different times exist, and these were not designed. But you go to opposite side of SL square, you will find the designed architecture in 21st century.
There was no square in Japan. Instead, bridges had important role

This season’s title is “CITY TALES”. Participants will learn through 12
workshops by international guests and make creative propositions towards urban
spaces. The program will be structured for a six months period divided
in three phases.
1. GLOBAL+REGIONAL (September-October)
2. COMMUNITY (November-December)
3. PROPOSITION (January-February)

In the ends, Julian ask some questions. "Is the city culture, or
nature?" "Who makes the city?" "Which parts of this city do you feel
close to, that you “belong to”?" "What is your image of Tokyo ?" "What
sensory experiences of Tokyo do you have that especially strong ?" "What
spaces in the city do you associate with fear or excitement ?" "What
time or era do you particularly associate with Tokyo ?" "Does Tokyo have
more in common with other big cities(e.g. London, New York, Shanghai)
than with other parts of Japan ?"

The first workshop will begin next week.
critical studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14165222127974267589noreply@blogger.com0
